Tri Anxiety

I've been on the Philly triathlon site about 10 times, filled out all the information, and then never finished. I keep thinking about 1- the Fran Crippen incident, which I know was high water temperature, high outside temperature and poor safety, and 2- the swimmer who died in the sprint tri in Philly last year.  I'm a strong swimmer - in the pool. But triathlon swimming doesn't even sound like it is the same as pool swimming, especially if you are swimming in the Schuykill?  I'm guessing you have to swim with your head up to see where you are going?  The water isn't clear.  I'm doing a pool one in April but I just can't click SUBMIT on this tri registration. (Also it's over $200!)

I'm putting together my race schedule for 2011. Trying to save money and so signing up for key races seems to be my goal right now.  Last week post 1/2 marathon, I ended up running through soreness on Tuesday because I had alot on my plate and just *needed* to run. I did 2 miles. I ended last week with 18 miles. This week my legs are tired and I'm getting back into the swim. I might start my run training at the beginning of the year and just get in maintenance miles until then. I don't want to slip below about 18-20 a week but it's tempting to take a running break.  I'm working on my goals and where I want to go from here.

I have these 2 cute pictures of the kids for xmas cards but cannot get one of them together. So frustrating! Maybe I should just get over having a picture of them together? This is what happens when I try to sit them together:

Nick starts saying "BEING MEAN" and gets up or kicks Kara away.
Or he says "PLEASE?" because I say Please sit there and smile.
Or he takes off his pants and gets up and walks around.
: )

  2. Those individual pictures of them are great!

And if the Philly triathlon is stressing you out - don't do it! There are plenty of other triathlons in less polluted waters to choose from.

  3. Oh what cuties! I have swum in the Schulykill...it's no as bad as you'd think, honestly. But follow your gut on it.

  4. Sweet pictures!

I don't know what advice to give you! Is there a try-a-tri or just a small open swim competition you could do? That way you don't commit to so much training if it's not 'for you'.

  5. The kiddos are too cute! I say use the individual photos. Maybe you could do a collage with the 2 photos here, plus a family photo (I think you posted a couple of those before). You are certainly blessed with a beautiful family!

  6. Ha! Any way you can photoshop them together?

Check out NJ and DE. There are some great olympic tris there that are a lot cheaper than Philly.

  8. "takes off his pants" - I laughed at that because there is a certain age where that just makes sense to little boys (says the mom of two (grown) boys).

The individual pictures are adorable! Do a photo card with both shots - I've seen that option at Shutterfly and Walgreens photo. Plenty of years ahead to get a single shot. :)

  9. $200 is A LOT for s short triathlon. usually that type of entry fee is reserved for a 1/2 IM distance! Find a different one. :)

    Cute pics!

  11. Cute pics - takes his trousers off! LOL - got a text from mate about her wee boy a wee while back that said: "oh to be 3 and laughing hysterically while jumping on trampoline until trousers fall off!" Boys and their troos!

If you want to do the tri you could, but if there is one that is cheaper and you feel happier about - def go for that.

Totally hear you about needing to run - some days it is the only thing to clear the head. Mega snowed in at mo', but hubby let me out at lunch (working from home) to run in the snow as needed some fresh air and boy was I in a better state of mind to deal with teething! LOL.

  13. I say go with the two separate pics - unless you want have someone take one of all 4 of you. Those bottom two are just SO cute!!

  15. Your kids are too cute! :)

As for the tri - you know, it's a scary thing, but you will totally survive and look backing thinking "what the heck was I worried about". Don't forget that you can always float on your back if you were to panic or something. Take the plunge... you will do fabulous and we'll be here cheering you on!

  16. How about a photo collage card and then the two separate pics would work? Also, open water swimming isn't that bad. You just need to practice in the open water and you'll get more comfortable with it. Either way you'll make the right decision for you so don't worry about it!

  17. Those pictures are beautiful!! My sister is having trouble getting a good pic of her 2 boys together.
You'll be fune during the swim in a tri! I always recommend doing a few open water swims before the race and if you can, try to practice with a friend swimming VERY close to you! Tris are fun! They are VERY expensive tho!!! Maybe start with a cheaper one? If you're a strong swimmer you will be fine!! go for it!

  18. I have literally done the exact same thing for the Philly tri - I am cool with the bike/run, but the swim? Yikes. I am not a swimmer and don't really have anywhere to to swim/anyone to coach me. I think I am going to find one with the shortest swim possible -- like maybe a lap around a kiddie pool or something -- and go for it.
