Trigger Times/Workout Times

I've been trying to eat well for a while, but a certain time of day, usually late afternoon, or after dinner, is usually when I mess up. Late afternoon/early evening I usually become ravenous and just eat whatever I can find. After dinner, I don't even know if I am hungry but I find something to eat, usually including peanut butter or my nut butters straight from the jar. What do you do to control mindless eating? What are some of your afternoon healthy snacks? Everything that I eat is mostly healthy, but it is wasted foods like pretzels and crackers that get me in the afternoon.

Running - Today I ran in the morning and early evening. The morning run was kind of dragging, the evening one was awesome! I was reading that evening runs feel like less effort is exerted, but I like getting it out of the way in the morning so that if something comes up, I know it is done. When do you workout?

  1. Wow, a run in the morning and in the evening, huh? That's great! I'm an evening runner, sometimes an afternoon runner, but never a morning runner. It's just not me.

  3. It's funny, I've been doing a lot of afternoon runs this training cycle because of scheduling, but that's generally my worst time of day for running, both in terms of energy and in terms of stomach problems.

Morning is always a good time for me, and when I had the gym membership, I'd often run in the evenings, too, like after 8 PM.

  4. Those are definitely my 2 trouble times too, late afternoon and after dinner. I haven't figured out a way to control it, but I sure wish I could!

  5. I was just talking with my husband about mindless eating. I do think I'm hungrier now than before pregnancy because I'm running, nursing, and busy with work and home. But I also need to be more conscious about what I eat when I'm hungry, particularly between meals. I do well with fruits and veggies but still cave when we have Hershey's Kisses or little peanut butter cups in the house. I think it helps to have someone to hold you accountable. Also helps to keep stocked on good snack options.

I prefer morning runs but spent much of last year running in the afternoon. It was just hot here though.

  6. I could have written that post myself. I had a great day with eating yesterday then last night I scarfed down peanut butter right from the jar. Then it makes me mad that I did it! I'm also struggling with when to run lately. I used to do every single morning but since we moved, I've been going after work. Wanting to have it out of the way today, i went this morning and I just didn't have it in me. Maybe I need to eat before I run in the morning or wake up and walk around a bit rather than rolling out of bed and hitting the road.

  7. I always like to have a little snack. However, I find that some chocolate soy milk helps with the cravings. Sometimes, I'll put it in the blender, with some ice, a banana and spoon full of peanut butter. It is very satisfying!

    How'd the zucchini come out?

  9. I hear you! I also like getting them over ASAP but find that the late afternoon runs are usually better.

  10. double runs - you rock! for, me I HATE any AM exercise; i am a bad waker-upper and our eldest still has sleep issues so I'm chronically sleep deprived. Afternoon is my preferred workout; not too early and not so late I am all atwitter for nighttime.

  11. I am going through some of the same issues now with snacking and hunger. My snacks usually consist of crackers (Kashi) with low fat cheese, crackers and either hummus or white bean dip, these really good for you chips called Food Should Taste Good in sweet potato or Everything flavours, banana, piece of bread with peanut or almond butter, bowl of cereal (Kashi heart to heart - yum!), those Laughing Cow cheese triangles or circles. I need to start supplementing the cheeses with some raw nuts though as it's not really holding me over from mid afternoon until after my run.

Not sure if this is any help, but can definitely relate to the whole snacking challenge!
