Organics, Lucky & thanks!

I won a contest today! It was a random drawing thing and I win a running outfit from Philadelphia Runner. How fun is that!?  CRAZY!!!

Thanks to all of the moms who gave me advice on the naps! Today Nick got up super early and we did 2 naps. I had such a better day and he didn't wake up crying and all was calm and good in our household!

Check out this top 10 foods to buy organic list. Where do you buy organic food?  What do you always buy organic? What stinks is that farmer's markets are not always organic, so whole foods seems to be all there is around here for organic produce. Pricey pricey!

  1. Congrats on the contest--fun! I buy my organics in a mixture of places; the grocery store, Trader Joe's, and through my CSA. I always buy organic milk and meat. With a daughter, I feel that's important--too many scary reports about girls going through puberty really, really young and the potential link to dairy/meat.

  2. I'm so glad the nap schedule went better for you today!
Our local grocery store actually has a pretty good organic section, but I still have to pick and choose what I buy organic based on price.

  3. Good to hear your napping went well today ;) Mine was not so good ... but for Brooke its not the norm so I'll survive.
As for organics, I find my local Jewel and Dominicks suck when it comes to organics. There is a fruit market that is a bit out of my way, but when I manage to get there they have a great selection at even better prices. Otherwise, I go to Whole Foods and pay through the nose.

  5. I make a 25 minute drive to whole foods once a week for the majority of shopping. Then if I need anything in the week I go to my local store 5 miles away, they have a good selection of organics.

I try to eat EVERYTHING organic- including meat. Since I'm not buying a lot of junk food to snack on, I eat less so my average of groceries is about the same since organic is a tad more. I try to buy alot of things out of the bulk section at whole foods because it's much cheaper. I also try to make a lot of things from scratch (ww tortillas, bread, granola bars, graham crackers, etc..) and it is MUCH cheaper and tastes better.

  8. Congrats on the win! I'm pretty fanatical abotu organic meats (especially chicken) and dairy. Milk grosses me out now that I'm pregnant, but before that, I was all about the good milk.

  9. Jealous of the win! Congrats!
I buy a lot of (most) of my veggies organic, especially the green ones. But I had not idea about potatoes! Crazy!
I just always end up paying through the roof since I HATE grocery shopping and buy what is ever there - sorry no help :(

  12. whole foods. here in boston Whole foods is actually cheaper than the "regular" food store. i get really mad when people call "whole foods," "Whole paycheck." half those ppl have never even been in, prices really aren't that bad and some of WF organic stuff is cheaper than Shaws' non-organic food! if somehting has a thick layer/peel, is banana, canteloupe, avocado etc, i don't buy organic. i eat A LOTTTTT of red peppers and strawberries, i rarely buy them organic but i dont eat artificial ingredients of any kind in other foods so i hope that balances it all out. i wash them really well too...for whatever that's worth...

  13. wohoo for winning!

So I am actually moving towards buying pretty much everything organic. THe more they find out about pesticides or the lack of nutrition in other veggies I can't help it. Having a Farmers Marketing or CSA is the only thing that makes it feasible though

  14. Congrats on your win!! It totally sucks that Farmer's Mkts don't always have organic...and you always have to ask the vendors how the food is grown. I am able to buy a lot of organic veggies and fruits at a little grocery market in town. Thank goodness for that because TRADER JOE's ( I love them) but they hardly carry any organic...isn't there something terribly wrong with that?! I wish there was a Whole Foods by me!

  15. I buy organic milk, but that is about it. I am starting to reconsider this and try to buy organics of those fruits and veggies that are higher in pesticides. I HATE grocery shopping and especially hate driving around to a bunch of different stores. Not sure what I will end up doing. Maybe wash my non-organic strawberries like crazy with a little soap?

  16. The food I really want to buy organic is meat. I am so freaked out by meat since watching Food Inc! But the cost of organic, grass fed beef is really prohibitive.

We always buy organic milk, yogurt, apples, pears, tomatoes, coffee (with unbleached filters...supposed to increase the amount of good cholesterol), potatoes, berries and peaches. Our local grocery store has a decent selection of those things, but when we do go to Whole Foods, I like to stock up on Earth's Best waffles and YoBaby Yogurt, since it is actually cheaper there than at my regular store. I just wish Costco carried organic whole milk!

  17. I buy most of my fruits and veggies with thin skins organic at Hy-vee, which is pretty expensive. I try to only buy what is on sale that week. Farmers market is great here. We are getting more organics at market, and I don't know, I feel like buying from market has GOT to be better than store bought non-organics!!! I am hoping to join a CSA this year, because that really seems to be the way to go!
