bummer

Everytime I get into a routine of going to swimming, I develop some kind of ear/sinus infection that lingers on for DAYS. DAYS! I don't know if I'm getting these from kid germs or what, but it's killing me! I went swimming on Monday - this infection started Saturday evening, I just felt awful, run down and sore throat. It morphed into ear/sinus pressure, runny nose, post nasal drip... ugh!  Before kids I never got sick. The last time I was at the sick doctor was 4 years ago!  I opted to skip swimming today after doing some research that it makes it worse. Understandable.

Since I am nursing, I don't want to take much. Last night I tried raw garlic after doing some research on that, and my breath still smells AWFUL! It tasted so, so badly. I was chasing it with cranberry juice and water.  I also picked up some homeopathic medicine at the drugstore.  The worst is my ear/head congestion. Swimming has been going so well since that coffee day and I just love going. Such a bummer to have to miss!  Do you have any home remedies? I might go to the doctor today, I can't be sick for Christmas!

  1. Oh no!!! I feel your pain! I woke up on Sunday with a killer cold that I think is turning into bronchitis! It stinks when sickyness gets in the way of exercising. I'm so bad with medicine so I can't help there!! Just drink lots of water!

  4. I'm a huge advocate of homeopathic remedies - I hope the one you picked up does the trick!

  5. Sorry to hear that you're sick! On the plus side, if you're nursing, at least you're passing along your antibodies to Kara and building her immune system!

  6. feel better! i am doing all the natural remedies on this cold that has lasted about a month so far. i can't take anything, but i've been doing extra fluids, hot decaf tea, eating small amounts of healthy food regularly (this might be more due to pregnancy than being sick), lots of rest and minimal exercise. i don't know if it's helping, plus with the holiday stres, it makes it even harder. i hope you have better luck!

  7. go to the healthfood store and buy Kyolic brand garlic. You won't smell or burp it! Get a nettipot and constantly flush out your sinuses with saline as well. I guarantee if you do both of these things it will go away faster and keep doing these during the winter to keep from getting them.

  8. You already used up the garlic suggestion I had - and yes, it's gross!! I could barely get down two of them!! Last year I started taking cod liver oil in liquid form (also up there on the gross-o-meter), but found a bottle of capsules that are good through next year, so working on those now. My mum did the liquid thing when I was growing and rarely got sick. I only got sick once last year and didn't go down like a sack of potatoes, so maybe there is something to it. At the very least it's supposed to be good for joints! :)

  9. Bummer indeed. Rotten - both hubby and I had ggastro flu the other week - together! Al was a bit worse so I had to look after Murray for most of it but had to get mum up the 2nd day to help! Babies and sickness do NOT go!

Sounds like your immune system is a little low. Make sure you are getting lots of B vitamins. Can you take echinacea whilst nursing? I'm not sure. It can really help to ward off colds at the first sign and I think lessen the length!

    Hope you feel better soon.

  12. Happens to me every single time I hit the pool.

Now I blow my nose all the way home from the pool. Once I get home I do a saline rinse, then I use Nasacort to get rid of the inflammation - it's a localized nasal spray, so maybe it won't get into your breastmilk?

I usually have to repeat for the 12 hours after being in the pool, then I'm fine.
