D-Day and taper

D- day - I decided that I'd stay home for this next school year and return August 2010. Hard decision, wasn't totally feeling good about either decision but felt better about staying home with the baby. So there is some weight off my chest on that one. With all of the emotions going on all week, I have hardly read any blogs - I'll catch up soon!

Taper - 2.5 weeks to go! What kind of taper do you do? How does your weekly mileage change? What do you do differently?

The ice bath Sunday definitely seemed to help. While I was sore, I feel like I was definitely less sore than in the past. The back of my right knee has been weird for the last 3 days, so I am trying to figure out what is going on with that ??? and my legs have been a big tired but otherwise good.

I'm so excited for the big day!!

  1. You must be relieved to have made a decision. Smart go with the one that seemed "more right."

I am terribly at tapering so I've got no advice. I typically reduce the miles and eat everything I can get my hands on.

  2. Hey

I have been following your running blog (amazing job!) and your journey to Boston (not long to go now!). I wanted to let you know about an event on marathon weekend that you might be interested in. There is this company called Running Skirts based out of CA and Canada and the owners are a set of twins who both run and design these fun and comfortable skirts. Anyway, they're having a pre-marathon trunk show event with marathon snacks etc on the Saturday night at the Copley Marriott in downtown Boston. They're on Facebook and I think they might have something on their website.

Anyway, I couldn't figure out whether to post this on your blog or not, but thought you might be interested. And anyone else in Boston that weekend!

  3. Sounds like you made the right choice. :o)

I try to run as often during taper, but not as hard. Rest is essential.

  5. Glad you're gonna get to stay home with Nick!! That's awesome your school allows you to gt you job back next year. :)

Typically tapering would involve cutting down your volume, but not your frequency or intensity. I always like to get in a 'race pace' session once or twice a week in the 2 weeks leading up to a race, but not a lot. Like just a few 1-3 minute pick-ups at race pace to keep yourself sharp. You're going to do great at Boston! Aren't you so psyched you decided to do it?!?!

  9. Glad to hear about your decision to stay home next year. I don't think you'll regret it!!!

As far as tapering, I think I start about two weeks before the marathon...by cutting down on the long runs. I peak at either 20 or 22, then go down to something like 16 the next week and 12 the week after that. I think that I cut a mile or two off of each run during the week...or at least that was the intent....I think I ended up taking more rest days, which can't hurt either!!!

  12. Congrats on making a decision! :)

I'm a big fan of the "less is more" taper strategy, but since you didn't train super long, I think you could keep a more moderate effort up a little longer than usual. But, that's assuming you're feeling great and with you knee I would definitely recommend rest. Basically, do what you want. :P You're going to do great in Boston!

  16. Today was RIDICULOUS! I ended up bailing after nine miles - I couldn't breathe with the constant wind gust. You were right to go home and sleep!
