Boobs and Moving On

Ok, now that the disappointment stage is kind of passing on, I can move on. I was seriously PISSED about the lack of soreness that I had today, which I attributed to my slow as sh** pace!
I am over retiring but I do need a break. I can't imagine going back to being normal... but I'm definitely going to do it for a little while. When should I run again? Maybe do a turkey trot on Thursday when I'm up in CT? There's a local 5 mile race the first weekend of December that might be fun. We'll wait on a marathon till next fall, if another one is in my future! I decided the next marathon that I will do will not be in Philly. I know it all too well and I need something new to inspire me. I do want to get into the tri-scene also. There are some local ones that Rebecca told me about so that would be cool.

Another thing I need to get off my chest (literally?) is the nursing. I'm trying real hard to make it to the year or at least mid -Jan so I can used frozen stored milk, but it is getting harder every day. I feel like I have barely anything left (besides for the morning which seems great), and Nick is not interested in having to work for it. I have made it this far (almost 10 months), and I don't want to give up, but I do want to give up. Any inspiration out there from moms?

  1. Sorry I haven't congratulated you on here yet! Glad you're over being pissed. I totally understand. But like everyone said..it's still 26 miles. And like I said in my text I really did forget how hard 26 miles really is...no matter the pace! But I am with ya on trying something different!

And on the boobs: I held on as long as I could because I liked the time we had together. It is so much harder to get that quiet, one on one time like you do when you're nursing. I had a harder time giving it up than he did :-). But I knew I didn't want to continue with it til he was 2 and they say once they hit the year and a half point it's really hard to give it up...so I stopped. But I miss it; not the every two hour gig, mind you. Just the last couple of months when it was just a few times a day :-)

  2. I stopped nursing Elena at 6.5 months because she had started crawling and wouldn't sit still enough to nurse. It was so frustrating for both of us that we just kind of stopped. I felt a little guilty, but honestly it was wonderful to have my body back. Plus, I don't think my supply was ever so great so Elena was very content to have bottles of formula.

  3. Baker stopped wanting to nurse around 9 months. I pretty much exclusively pumped for a couple of months and then he started nursing well again. Now, at 13 months, we're still going strong. I found that pumping several times a day helped keep my supply up and I also took Feenageek supplements. Good luck with it! If you do have to supplement with formula, don't beat yourself up. It is what it is and you've done great!

  4. seems to me like you are just being too hard on yourself and you need to find your love of running again.. you didn't start running to be the fastest ever did you? Maybe a break and focusing on just the relief it gives you will be helpful

  5. Think about it, he's older and his nutritional needs are changing...meaning he's getting solids now so he's not soley depending on the milk...that's why you're supply is going down. It's normal. The fenugreek does help with supply (from my experience). But I agree with Rebecca, if he's starting to stop showing interest, there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving up the nursing and still pumping.

You can still get that one on one time with him. Follow his lead and your instincts and you won't go wrong with whatever decision you make. Remember, you've made it farther than most already!

  6. I only had issues with my milk supply that late when I didn't eat enough. I'm sure you're eating enough. But think about the stress you just put on your body and how much you work out? I really think it's from that. Stress can make your supply drop.

It's totally up to you how much longer you want to nurse. They do recommend at least til a year otherwise you'll have to supplement with formula until then. You might want to try the fengugreek or Mother's Milk Plus is good too. Strangely, none of the supplements worked for me. Eating oatmeal for breakfast everyday and drinking lots of water is what helped me.

I was wanting to nurse til he was 2 years old, but with sleep issues and constantly nursing at night I was done at 14 months. Did it help the sleep issues? Nope. Oh well.

Just do what you think is best and what YOU can handle :-)

  7. I only made it 9 months. Pumping at work didn't keep my supply up and once Zach started biting he was done getting it straight from the source. Plus, he LOVES real food so I can't imagine him still being on the boob. But I think it's different for everyone. If you feel like it's the right time to give it up, it probably is. Trust your instincts.

  8. Sounds like a break is in order. I took one after the marathon and felt completely refreshed.

Good luck with the BFing. Sorry, no advice here.

  9. I went through a period around 9-10 months where I just wanted to quit b/c I wasn't making enough. I started supplementing when Nathan started day care. I know I don't make enough for him to survive on, but I still like the tender moments with him. My right boob has dried up at this point and I still get about 4-5 oz when I pump 1x a day at work. I'm trying to decide when to stop. I say stop when you feel like you are ready. Formula isn't the worst thing in the world. I nursed Nathan for over a year now and he STILL has allergies. I have noticed that I have lost ~2lbs since cutting back on nursing. Maybe it will help you with weight loss to stop.

  10. You really sound like you just need a break from races and pressure, etc. Get out there and just run for fun. No watch, no pace, just do what feels good. Take it back to the basics and enjoy it.

    Can't help with the boobies.

  11. I am glad to read you are done beating yourself up and are looking ahead to run races. Yeah for you!

Boobs. I am the weird one, again. I nursed my middle one until she was...nearly...3. Ok ok ok. I know. I took her to work with me for the first year and a half so it was easy and then I pumped at work and nursed when we were together (never did use all the stored milk!). She still wanted to and I still had milk because of the pumping. To increase your supply, it that is what you want. Simply add pumpings throughout your day. Make sure you are drinking lots of water, too. Good Luck whatever you choose to do. Breastfeeding is such a great thing for mom and baby!!

  12. I went through 7 months by my little one could care less. She likes to eat, but wansnt into the mommy & me time. I still felt guilty when I stopped, though she didnt care a bit. I'd say I felt guilty for about a week, then was happy to reclaim my life and my body and I got over it pretty quick ;)

Do what works for you - that is ALWAYS the right thing. Regardless of what anyone else says or does!

  13. As for running. Just try to enjoy it again. Go out for a run when you can, don't worry about distance or pace. Your body has gone through so much this year, it may just need a little break.

  14. we stopped BF at 8 months (almost) since andra has enormous adenoids which means she really can't breather through her nose well. it made the whole nursing thing a nightmare the last month and we were both happy to let it go. take this as a transition time, get used to the idea of stopping and you'll know when it's right. and yeah, you'll probably lose a couple pounds pretty quickly once you stop. hope you do the turkey trot with me thurs!!

  15. Try running shorter distances-- i cant wait to just go out for 4 miles max 3-5 times per week. 4 miles takes 30-40 minutes vs 2-4 hours! gah! i'm so ready for a break too so i totally understand. running the same race is cool & great but running it over and over so much that you know the course and are bored with it makes it not as interesting cuz u remember things. the next one you should plan a lil trip out of! :) maybe chi town!?!?!? :)

  16. I have no advise on the boobs, but I'm sure I will be asking you the same question in about a year.

As far as a break goes, I have to say, as much as I miss racing (and running) it is kind of nice to have some time off. I think it's making me more and more excited about getting back to it after I was starting to feel burnt out last year. Sometimes a break is all you need.
