Fueling

For Philly, I don't have a tried and true fueling method this time. In April I did 3 Gus but I dropped one and ended the race starving. I was looking for ANYTHING any fans were handing out. I like the ideas of the SHOT BLOCKS - has anyone tried margarita? I've only tried one flavor and it was plum looking. I did like them. I've had the GU CHOMPS - only in orange and strawberry. I want to try the blueberry pom one! For GU, I need to get some chocolate mint - is it out yet? I have the vanilla gingerbread and it is AMAZING!! I'm thinking a combo of these will work for me. I like the up and coming PB & J idea - but I feel like I'd smoosh them. How does one carry those along?

Last day for Amazing Grass bars giveaway!!

  1. I like the idea of having various forms of fueling (gel, chomps, bloks, etc.) and different flavors - keeps things interesting and makes them go down easier!

  2. I think Danica over at chicrunner, said she puts them in those snack size zip locks...cut into tiny squares. She also wears a fuel belt that they are able to sit in a tiny pocket. Personally, I just use gu's. This weekend I gu-ed 5 times. I carried three and took two from the water stations. I say, go with what you know. Or have Bill waiting at a few spots to replenish your stash.
You're gonna rock it girly! :)

  3. I use the margarita bloks. I use that flavor b/c of the added salt content. I think they work great and they don't upset my stomach. I told you this yesterday...but I take one blok every 2.5 miles so there isn't a huge rush of sugar to my stomach. The are convienent too with the new packaging. No need to put them in a baggie...actually, that makes it harder to get them out cause they are sticky.

  6. Good luck! I have no great advice. I use power gels and sports beans. I hated the luna moons. They were too chewy and stuck to my teeth and I had a hard time swallowing them.

  7. Its inevitable. The pb&j squares get smashed. But the more smashed the easier better. I put them in a ziplock and then carry them in my iFitness/spibelt. 4 suqares + some sports beans should do the trick... im hoping anyway!

  8. I tried the margarita's before and it wasn't my cup of tea - and it also reminded me of a bad hangover - so try them pre-race. But i do hear the added salt content of those is helpful, esp. if you don't take salt tabs.

  9. Sorry I can't help because I'm that not so smart runner that barely even fuels during a marathon! However, I am excited you asked this because I am determined to change my ways and use fuel for my next half in Feb!

  11. I've only tried the margarita blocks once and found them to be too salty, but I feel like I should try them again before passing judgment.

I did see chocolate mint gu at REI the other day.

  13. I use the Shot Bloks and also Honey Stingers - they're an all-natural version but they work just the same. Love 'em.
