Race week

Today I did the same workout as I did before my half marathon last month. I like to call it mini speedwork: 2 x 1 minute at race pace with 1 minute in between, 4 x 1/4 mile with 1/4 mile jogs in between, 2 x 1/2 mile with 1/4 mile in between and 1 mile at race pace, sandwiched between warmup and cooldown.

Last month my average for the entire workout was 8:40. Today it was 8:17. I need to drop about 40 seconds off my average pace from the half marathon, so it looks like it will be close but I might not be there. I bet my pace will be around 7:42 for Broad Street.  I'm questionable as to whether I can hit the 1:15/7:30pace but that is what I'm going for. The weather is looking warm, 73 is the high for Sunday. Can we get some weather just in the 60s? We jumped from 45 Saturday morning to 85 yesterday. Really??? It's April 25 and we had to put on the air.

I did not run Sunday or Monday hoping to give my hip or butt or whatever it is a break. I don't know what it is exactly - it's just below my butt on my right side. Hamstring?  It's a new pain and I'm not sure what brought it on and I can't figure out what to do to help it. I did yoga on Sunday but then it seemed worse yesterday. Any ideas on what it could be? It seems maybe too high for my hamstring? but I have no idea what it could be. I thought it was my hip at first.

  1. Sorry to hear that you are still in pain. When my issues first started, stretching would also make it worse. My recommendation is to see Dr. Kropf at Westside Wellness in Wayne (check to see if they accept your insurance). He has really been a miracle worker for me. I saw every type of health professional I could think of and he is the only one that is helping. I honestly think that if I didn't see him I would have continued to be in pain and have problems for the rest of my life.

  2. I think my comment some how didn't go through so here it is again. If it comes through twice i apologize. Sorry to hear about your discomfort and I hope you are feeling better by the time your race gets here. Good luck!

  3. Dumb question - but have you foam rolled it? I often find that I get some twinges in the same area, when I neglect to make that part of my training/workout.

  4. I hate when the weather jumps from winter to summer. Wish spring would last longer! Here's hoping for a nice day on the weekend.

  5. That is an odd place. Could be the priformis. I know some who roll that area with a tennis ball. Is it sharp, shooting pain or dull aching pain? I'm not sure if that makes a difference, but I have typically found sharp pains to be muscle strains and dull, long lasting aches to be over-use issues.

  6. We have some good weather too. I've had that pain too. I think it can be due to overuse / muscle imbalances. Are your hamstrings / core strong enough? I'm thinking - the core can take a long time to regain good strength after pregnancy so maybe other muscles are having to work overly hard - just a theory.
Hope it gets better soon and you have a good race at the weekend.
