birthday treats

I was iffy about going swimming this morning. The past 2 nights due to the heat Nick has been sleeping in our room in the pack and play and last night he woke up a few times and made some noise - then just went back to sleep, but of course it woke me up! So when the clock said 5, I went to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, got ready.. and then got back in bed.  I was in bed a few minutes when I decided I was too hungry to go back to sleep anyway, so I got up and grabbed some food and headed out the door.  Lucky for me, today was a guy's birthday that swims in my lane and someone brought dunkin donuts!  I love the chocolate munchkins so after my efforts and getting up, I was rewarded with some of these :) Yippee! Totally worth it to get up!  Today would be a fun day to have a baby: 7-7.

In the mail yesterday, I received a sample of the Clif Granola Bars  in Chocolate Chip Flavor - I must have signed up for a free sample somewhere and it was amazing! I really liked it. It was crunchy and reminded me of those Nature Valley bars that you can crush and put in your yogurt. Kashi makes or made ones similar, but with the chocolate chips and sweetness, it was really good. They come 2 bars in a pack and have 180 calories (per 2 bars), 8g fat, 4g protein.

The ingredients: Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Sunflower Oil, Chocolate Chips (Evaporated Cane Juice, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla), Rice Crisp (Rice Flour, Barley Malt Extract, Evaporated Cane Juice, Salt, Calcium Carbonate), Honey, Natural Flavors, Organic Barley Flakes, Organic Rye Flakes, Oat Bran, Oat Fiber, Sea Salt (Real Salt®), Inulin (Chicory Extract).

I have to see where they sell them. Besides that I should stock up on chocolate chip z bars and have been wanting to figure a way to make them - I would like these too - they are awesome!  It looks like you can get them on amazon - $3.99/10 bars + shipping. Look for them in your grocery/natural food store.

During this pregnancy, I've had a craving / interest in coffee. I've had sips of Bill's here and there, but I've never been a coffee drinker. I love the smell and do not like the taste. I have always been a tea drinker but lost interest during both pregnancies. Today I think I am going to have a cup of decaf coffee. My first cup of coffee ever. How weird is that? Do you drink coffee? tea? what is your beverage of choice?

Yesterday I was on a mission for healthy snacks for Nick. I picked up some of the "just blueberries from whole foods but they are not organic and expensive!  I also bought Happy Babies yogurt melts -another rip off.  He'll eat fruit and tempo bars for his snacks, and sometimes crackers and goldfish but the last 2 I see as crap snacks.  I've been making tempo bars (no bake granola bars) at least once every 2 weeks - they store well and I feel they are a healthy snack.  I'm trying to think what else is transportable for healthy snacks.  If you have kids, what do you give them or carry in your bag for when you are out and about?
Perhaps the biggest rip off of all of my purchases yesterday was these Plum Organics Fruity Fingerfuls - seriously it is like a cup of cereal and dried strawberries (1 cup total of both!) in a bag and it was around $3.50. Never buying that again.

  1. Those bars look good! I agree a 7/7 baby would be cool.....get cracking Natalie ;-)

I got into drinking coffee after I weaned Ethan, then I decided to cut back because of the caffeine. I do miss it though...

I actually really got into herbal teas when I was pregnant with Ethan.

  2. Homemade graham crackers, granola bars, Annie's cheese crackers, pretzels and trail mix is Ethan's various snacks when we are away from home.

  3. I'm a coffee addict. I love iced coffee especially. Panera's hazelnut coffee is delicious.

I send Jacob to daycare with Food Revolution Grammy Sammies when I can get them on sale, but I bought too many of them, and he is sick of them now. He also likes dehydrated apples. At a bbq, I found out he loves melon balls so that's kind of easy if you bring an insulated bag.

Have you checked out weelicious? She posts recipes several times a day on facebook.

  5. I love coffee, but could never drink it when I was pregnant. It's so weird... I found the smell and taste nauseating, but as soon as I gave birth, I was back at it again. I like tea, too - iced in the summer and hot in the winter :)

  6. I am so addicted to coffee. I felt so horrible in the first trimester that I stopped drinking it cold turkey. But now that I feel better I drink a cup a day since it greatly improves my quality of life. Coffee is actually full of antioxidants and some studies have touted additional health benefits.

  7. I always pack a banana when we go somewhere. They are very portable and travel pretty well. I have the hardest time packing Jack's lunch and snacks for daycare. He is somewhat picky and I don't have time to make all these homemade bars and things. I send him with diced fruit (peaches, grapes, strawberries), applesauce, some kind of pasta, a TLC cereal bar, a babybel light cheese, and of course either goldfish or Cheerios.

  9. I got the Clif Granola Bars sample in the mail yesterday too! I ate them on the way to work this morning and they were soooo good!! I agree, those yogurt melts are a rip off! I was going to buy some but when I lifted up the package and felt around there was hardly anything in it!!! I like coffee and tea! I missed drinking coffee with caffeine when I was pregnant...

  10. I might be the only person currently residing in the USA who does not like coffee - in any form. Oddly enough I love the smell though. Trying to like herbal and fruit tea, as I know they're good for you. When I see my husband without coffee (cranky!) I am glad that I don't like it. But then I see how much energy people who drink it do have and I'm somewhat wistful :)

Congrats on the swimming. You must have so many people waiting to see if you will blog/show up at the gym/swimming. The second you don't we'll all be wondering!!

  11. I am drinking coffee right now!

I love coffee and would drink it by the pot if I allowed myself, but I generally try to keep the consumption reasonable. When I was preggo and nursing, restricting my caffeine intake was one of the hardest things I had to do to adjust my diet. And even then, I still drank coffee, just not very much.

  13. I was never a coffee drinker until like 4 months ago...been a stressful few months and coffee has pulled me through. The problem...I'm hooked! I drink a turbo iced coffee from DD splenda and skim milk!

Trader Joe's has a lot of dried fruit that Emma likes. She also eats organic crackers and such like Annie's.
