Last hard workout before marathon

I remember I used to do a speed workout the Monday before running a marathon - but I can't remember what it was. What is your last hard workout before marathon weekend? Which day did you do it and what do you do?

I'm also interested in eating for optimal performance. What do you eat while in training mode to be as fit as possible? I'm frustrated on this front because I'm still carrying extra weight around and I feel like I am a very good eater.

  1. My last really hard workout is probably the final 18/20 miler before the taper, but I'll maybe throw in a track workout the Tuesday before the race. Something easy like 6x400.

As for pre-race diet, the week before I race, I try to eat clean and to incorporate carbs into every meal.

Don't sweat it about carrying around some extra weight. You had a baby not so long ago, and aren't you still nursing? From where I'm sitting, you're strong and gorgeous.

  2. I'm doing sharpening/speed work up through Thursday. Easy run Fri and off on Sat.

  3. I unfortunately wasn't very dilligent about my diet during marathon training and went into the race with 10 extra pounds. Not good! I probably could have taken a more protein/less carbs approach, but I love my breads/pasta/potatoes/TREATS. (Oops!)

The last "hard" workout I did was a 10-mile race pace the weekend before and incorporating some strides on the Thursday and/or Friday run.

  4. The week of the marathon, I like to do 400s on Tues. I do 10 to 12 X 400 with 1 mile w/u and 1 mile c/d. Most of my speed work throughout my marathon training is 800s-1600s, but marathon week I like to do 400s. It's nice to get the legs going with a little speed. Most of my other workouts would be easy walking. If it's a Sunday marathon, I would probably run 3-4 miles on Thurs.

For me, I try to do no red meat marathon week. Other than that, just trying not to gain any weight leading up to the big day.

I hope you have a great race.
    Good Luck and have fun!

  5. I don't usually hit speedwork the week before a marathon, maybe I should:) As for nutrition, I try to cut back on cheese, I love it and eat way too much. I also try and cut out sugars mainly from sweets.

  6. I love speedwork! And the week before I usually do it Monday. And the rest of the week I do easy, smaller runs. I try to do a medium MP run on Wednesday. Always off on Saturday and an EASY run on Friday.

  7. I did 1 mile wu, 1 x 1600, 800 jog,4 x 400 w/ 200 jog, 1 mile cd.

I eat whatever I want, but try to only have one sweet a day @ 300 calories. This being said I haven't been on a scale in a month!

  8. I think I am going to head out today for a 3 miler. It is just tooooo beautiful of a day not too. then again the hubby is coming home so we'll see how that goes. I might need a different workout! haha...did I just write that?? :-)

Tomorrow for sure I am still going to do the 1 mile WU and then 4 x 400 and a 1 mile cd.

Good luck! We need to figure out when and where we're meeting up!

  11. I took things pretty easy after my last long run of 20 miles - I figured I'd need all the energy possible to get through the marathon itself! Good luck, can't wait to hear all about it!

  12. Brad Hudson (coach and author of Run Faster) says that there's no need to do sharpening speedwork the week before a marathon. He says 4 miles MP on the Tuesday before. That said, you need to do whatever will get you in the right mindset . :)

  13. I recommened eating Taco Bell and fun size Snickers.

Wait? You don't want the runs on marathon day? You want to run? Well, I can't help you there. Nurtition advice from me would be like asking for underwear advice from Britney Spears.

  14. First of all, its not uncommon to carry around a bit of extra weight for a whole year after a baby. Sucks, but true. In addition, it takes a while for everything to move back in place ... and some of it (unfortunately) never does. It could be what you are eating, but it could just be the result of pregnancy or your new "post pregnancy body".

As for the workout before a marathon - I've only done 2 but I have not done anything like a speed workout prior. Im way too into the cutback and also worried about injuring myself ;)
